OVERVIEW:
Reporting to VP of LAL Chemistry, Materials Scientist will be responsible for leading the development of silicone-based formulations for adjustable lens technology as well as advancing understanding and characterization techniques of silicone raw materials. Key responsibilities will include formulation characterization, optimization and development, as well as synthesis of new materials for the next generation of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, development, and extensive characterization of silicone-based polymer resins
- Optimization of silicone material selection process to enhance the scale and quality of the LAL
- Analysis of silicone raw materials, intermediate formulation mixes and final formulations using conventional soft materials characterization techniques: GPC, rheology, spectroscopy: NMR, UV-Vis and Raman, thermal characterization techniques: DSC, DMA, TGA, proficiency in mechanical characterization: Universal Tester and Durometer
- Analysis of formulation mixes and resulting lenses by electron microscopy techniques: SEM and TEM as well as AFM and STM
- Synthesis of silicone-based and silicone-containing monomers and polymers utilizing various polymerization techniques: ring-opening, cationic, anionic, and controlled radical polymerizations
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong background in polymer chemistry/organic materials science is a must
- In depth knowledge of polymeric materials characterization techniques: GPC, NMR, optical and thermal analysis
- Proficiency in polymer microscopy: SEM, TEM, AFM, STM and corresponding sample preparation
- Experience with formulation development and optimization
- General familiarity with molecular simulation tools and polymer analytics
- Creative technical skills that lead to innovative approaches to the development process.
- Effective analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply creative solutions to challenges
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- None
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING:
- Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Materials Science (soft materials), Polymer Chemistry or Polymer Engineering
- 3-5 years of relevant work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong preference for a minimum of 2 years in medical devices industry where polymer chemistry is a critical element essential in the product
- Training to be completed per the training plan for this position as maintained in the document control system
- The training requirements on TRN-10007 Insider Trading Policy, TRN-10008 Global Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption Policy and TRN-10009 Code of Business Conducts and Ethics must be diligently completed within 30 days from the hiring date and on an annual basis
