Research Technologist

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Research Technologist who will be responsible for performing routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures, and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.

The Research Technologist will work under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform biological experiments.
• Will have independent projects and may be included as a co-author of publications resulting from his or her work in the laboratory.
• Specific techniques used include cell and tissue culture, PCR, DNA extraction and analysis, gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry, and immunostaining.
• Must be familiar with the operation of basic laboratory equipment and with sterile technique.
• Will perform, evaluate, and troubleshoot methods as necessary, prepare solutions and reagents following standard procedures, and keep an organized lab notebook.
• Meet at least weekly with the principal investigator to report on research and laboratory status.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must be able to manipulate small and large test tubes, flasks, and pipettes.
• Interest in learning a multitude of diverse techniques and flexibility regarding projects and protocols is important.

• Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
• Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a High School Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
