GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Toppel Career Center’s vision is to empower and connect students to achieve a lifetime of career fulfillment. This position will support this vision by leading internship-related initiatives at the University of Miami and directly supervising two Career Education student interns. The Assistant Director of Internships is responsible for directly overseeing the Toppel Internship Program course, managing the Angelo Family Endowment Fund that supports students with financial barriers to complete internships, and collaborating with the International Student and Scholar Services department. Works independently toward carrying out departmental objectives utilizing the knowledge and application of departmental and University policies and procedures.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Internship Program Management

  • Responsible for overall development and management of the Toppel Internship Program, a comprehensive credit-bearing internship program, including enrolling students in the program and monitoring completion requirements
  • Coordinate the collection of required documentation and assignments from students and employers participating in the Toppel Internship Program
  • Collect and maintain accurate records and statistical information to measure the success of the Toppel Internship Program
  • Develop and implement outreach programs to educate students, faculty, and staff about internships
  • Responsible for the management and execution of all aspects of the Angelo Family Endowment Fund, including developing application materials and evaluation rubrics, marketing the Fund, coordinating a selection committee, and general oversight of the allocation of funds for unpaid/underpaid interns
  • Directly responsible for all internship postings on student and alumni career management platform
  • Oversee maintenance of internship-related website content
  • Inform team on any changing legislation or national organization directives pertaining to internships
  • Set criteria, in coordination with the International Student and Scholar Services department, for all international students to participate in internships, as it relates to state and federal law

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise two Career Education Interns who support internship-related projects: responsible for managing the position description, developing goals and learning objectives, ongoing training, and performance evaluation
  • Provide one-on-one career coaching to support students and alumni in exploring skills and interests, identifying values and goals and how they relate to career paths, the graduate school application process, identifying resources within an industry or area of interest, and searching for jobs and internships 
  • Develop collaborative relationships with academic and non-academic departments within the University with the goal of improving career opportunities and resources for undergraduate and graduate students  
  • Assist Employer Engagement team in building relationships with employers hiring University of Miami students for internships
  • Provide outreach to faculty, student organizations, and alumni through presentations and classroom & community outreach  
  • Serve as liaison to academic schools/colleges and other departments as established with the Director of Career Education 
  • Assist in the department’s student assessment measures, including needs assessments and satisfaction surveys with the assistance of the Director, Communication and Assessment 
  • Staff events during some evening and weekend hours 
  • Participate in weekly meetings with team members 
  • Perform other duties as assigned
