What we are looking for:
The Chesapeake Health Department (CHD) is currently seeking a qualified registered
nurse to join its clinic team as a Public Health Nurse (PHN). This pivotal role
encompasses a variety of responsibilities, focused on assessments, delivering essential
screenings, testing, evaluations, treatment, and case management services for
mandated and other public health clinical programs. Clinic services include, but are not
limited to, immunization, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis screening, breast
and cervical cancer screenings, as well as potential cross-coverage to other community-
based services. The PHN will also be integral to re-establishing family planning and
women’s health services with the team.

Collaboration is key in this role; the PHN works closely with various individuals, groups,
and families to strategize and implement health improvement programs tailored to meet
the unique needs of the community. These programs may encompass health education
initiatives, outreach efforts, and community engagement activities designed to promote
a healthier Chesapeake.

collaborative approach to patient care and public health services.
In the event of a Governor's emergency declaration, public health nurses are required to
assume additional duties for the district's emergency preparedness and response
(EP&R) activities. This includes, but is not limited to, point-of-dispensing (POD) mass
vaccination events and shelter coverage. During declared emergencies, the health
department will adjust work hours, locations, job duties, and participation in training to
meet public health and business needs. Additional potential work-schedule variations
include involvement in community outreach events and other EP&R assignments, such
as communicable disease investigations, epidemiological events, and city emergency
shelter duties. This role demands a high level of flexibility and adaptability, ensuring that
the nurse is always ready to respond to any situation.
VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.
Minimum Qualifications
• Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
• Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and
counseling technique
• Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
• Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
• May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
Additional Considerations
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Additional study in the area
of health promotion/or public health is preferred
• BSN preferred
• Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and
health promotion
