General Function

Under the direction of a Program Director, the Gym Monitor leads and monitors the activities of  the Gym Center/Program participants in experiences related to personal growth, service to others, and social development.

 

Know How

  1. Must be at least 18 years old and have 2 years experience working with teens (21 years preferred).
  2. Possesses good human relation skills with parents, peers and other staff.
  3. Enjoys teenagers and has the ability to interact and communicate with them effectively.
  4. Demonstrates good moral character.
  5. Has leadership experience with youth groups and knowledge of group work principles and processes.
  6. Maintain current certifications in CPR Heartsaver and First-Aid certification, Child Abuse Prevention training, Safety and Risk Management training and other designated training determined by Supervisor.
  7. Utilizes age-appropriate behavior management techniques with participants and models appropriate behavior.
  8. Displays good organizational skills related to handling paperwork and maintaining materials in a neat and orderly manner.

 

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Accepts and is able to demonstrate Core Values of the YMCA.
  2. Document’s attendance and emergency information on each participant.
  3. Assists with planning, supervision and implementation of programs.
  4. Maintains quality of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  5. Maintains a professional attitude and loyalty to the organization.
  6. Has a complete knowledge of emergency procedures.
  7. Responsible for set-up, upkeep and tear down of the Teen Center and/or designated programs.
  8. Any other duties assigned by Supervisor.

 

Member Involvement Skills

  1. Be informed and up-to-date on the latest developments in your field.
  2. Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
  3. Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
  4. Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.
  5. Support our YMCA annual campaign, invite members to participate.
  6. Be able to articulate the role and importance of volunteers.
  7. Be informed about volunteer opportunities.
  8. Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged and the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized.

 

Physical and Mental Requirements

  1. Ability to visibly observe participants and area of supervision.
  2. Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  3. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and transport equipment from one location to another.
  4. Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
  5. Ability to communicate with parents, staff/volunteers and participants effectively.
  6. Ability to reason and solve problems.
  7. Ability to make sound judgment and decisions even when distracted by noise and activity.
  8. Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
  9. Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR effectively.
