About the role

Overview

The Senior Software Engineer specializing in Appian plays a pivotal role in steering the design, implementation, and optimization of low-code workflow and automation solutions across the enterprise. This role blends deep technical expertise in Appian with strong application architecture and workflow design capabilities.

 

This resource will immediately support our Payment BU workflow intelligence and optimization Initiative using Appian, collaborating with Cotiviti teams on Client Inquiry and Payment workflow use cases. Closely working with other architects and senior engineers, this individual will help assess existing applications, produce detailed designs for Appian components, and drive the implementation of scalable, secure, and reusable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain Appian specific design & development standards, design patterns, and best practices for Appian and other workflow platforms.
  • Partner with other Cotiviti engineers to evaluate existing applications and design modernized workflow solutions focused on payment integrity and client-facing processes.
  • Design and develop Appian components for strategic initiatives, ensuring scalability, maintainability, security, and interoperability.
  • Evaluate and integrate complementary workflow technologies where appropriate (e.g., JBPM, Drools, PowerFlow, Camunda).
  • Collaborate across team - product management, infrastructure, security, and data engineering—to ensure seamless system design and integration.
  • Support Appian-specific CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices, and automated testing frameworks.
  • Provide technical mentorship, conduct code/design reviews, and promote a culture of engineering excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5-10 years of application design & development experience, including enterprise-grade design and solutioning.
  • 3+ years of hands-on Appian design and development experience in production environments.
  • Strong proficiency in application architecture patterns (apian specific), integration design, and workflow orchestration.
  • Hands-on in Appian Expression Language (AEL) to define logic in interfaces, process models, rules, and more.
  • Designed and modeled relational databases (RDBMS) with a focus on normalization, indexing, and query optimization.
  • Implemented caching strategies (e.g., Redis, Memcached) to enhance application performance and reduce database load.
  • Knowledge about Appian UX design implementation
  • Knowledge of Appian AI capabilities desired.
  • Proficient in REST API design and integration, SSO, RBAC, and security best practices.
  • Experience in building scalable, secure, and observable workflow solutions.
  • Familiarity with Appian plugins, Appian RPA, Data Fabric, and Appian DevOps toolchain.
  • Strong understanding of agile development practices, preferably SAFe.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills; ability to communicate with both business and technical stakeholders.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Appian Senior Developer certification or higher.
  • Background in Healthcare IT, especially payer systems or payment integrity solutions.
  • Experience helping establish an Appian CoE or similar platform enablement model.
  • Exposure to business architecture or experience translating business capabilities into technical solutions.
  • Experience advocating for and socializing low-code strategy within an enterprise setting.

  • Communication Skills: Effective communication skills are crucial for conveying complex technical concepts and insights to non-technical stakeholders clearly and understandably through written reports, presentations, and verbal discussions.
