Salary:   $70,000 - $100,000 / year

 

Flexible location with ability to drive to Webster, MA for training/meetings, based on business need

Agency visits throughout the State of MA will also be required

 

Job Summary
Responsible for driving the growth of Commercial Lines by underwriting new business across all lines while building and maintaining strong agency relationships – partnering with agency staff, Business Development Representatives and Renewal underwriters. Performs agency management responsibilities that involve analyzing, monitoring, and evaluating assigned agencies to identify concerns or trends within a book of business. Works with assigned agencies to influence the overall profitability, quality and composition of the book of business and adherence to the company's objectives. Provides assistance to unit members in achieving service and production standards. Researches technical underwriting issues and problems in order to provide alternatives and solutions. Develops information regarding market conditions and overall industry knowledge. Provides technical assistance and training to develop underwriting personnel.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education: Bachelor's Degree or professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, or equivalent, related experience.
Experience: 2 - 4 years - or Associates Degree equivalent plus 4 - 6 years.
Knowledge: General knowledge of industry practices, standards, and concepts within field of work. Applies them to perform work requiring analytical business skills.
Decision Making: Makes decisions related to a wide variety of situations within management limits. Interprets guidelines and procedures, applying judgment and discretion. Decisions influence portions of a project, client relationships and/or expenditures.
Supervision Received: Works independently under general supervision. Work is reviewed for overall adequacy in performing tasks.
Leadership: May provide training and guidance to less experienced staff.
Problem Solving /Operations/Direct Work Involvement: Develops solutions to a variety of problems, typically of moderate scope and complexity. Refers to and interprets policies and practices for guidance.
Client Contacts: Contacts other departments and or external organizations or parties frequently. Contacts are primarily at or below upper management levels. Represents organization on specific projects. Communication may involve persuasion, and negotiation.

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Prior experience as a Commercial Lines Underwriter I or equivalent at another insurer, or underwriting services supervisor is required. AU, ARM, CIC or CPCU Designation preferred.  Demonstrates ability to exercise business judgement, effective oral and written communications, sales and negotiations skills, analytical skills, and time management within the current job assignment.
