The primary purpose of the Laboratory is to provide specimen collection and testing services to the Durham County Department of Public Health Clinics, Environmental Health, and Lincoln Community Health Center to assist with medical/environmental services that enhance the general health and well-being of the county.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for providing quality-assured laboratory services.
- This position must function with a high level of self-direction and requires teamwork on a daily basis to solve patient care and analytical issues in the laboratory as they occur.
- This position is expected to engage effectively in discussions with the Laboratory Supervisor, Technical Consultant, and clinicians. Verbal and/or written communications as well as excellent customer service skills are required.
- Performs related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- General practical and theoretical knowledge of the variety of laboratory procedures applicable to the area(s) of work;
- General practical and considerable theoretical knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology;
- General knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how the medical laboratory science is applied in the medical field;
- Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and in the performance of procedures;
- Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to instruct students and other health professionals in laboratory procedures and instrumentation;
- Ability to work as part of a team;
