Remote with regular travel across our client site (Midlands, Wales, North England & Scotland)

Lead the Future of Safety at Amey

We are seeking an exceptional Head of HSEQ to join our senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Director of Health & Safety for Complex Facilities at Amey. This is one of the most senior HSEQ leadership positions within the business and offers the opportunity to influence health, safety and operational excellence across a workforce of 5,000 employees plus contractors, delivering critical services across the UK.

As the principal HSEQ leader within your remit, you will provide strategic direction, governance and assurance, ensuring the highest standards of compliance, operational excellence and continuous improvement are embedded throughout the business.

Leading a team of 28 HSEQ professionals, including 4 direct reports, you will play a pivotal role in developing capability, driving cultural change and ensuring HSEQ remains at the heart of operational and business decision-making.

What you will do

  • Leading, coaching and developing a team of 28 HSEQ professionals across multiple locations and operational environments, creating a high-performing and collaborative team environment.
  • Direct line management responsibility for 4 senior HSEQ managers.
  • Providing strategic HSEQ leadership and direction for HSEQ across a workforce of approximately 5,000 employees plus contractors.
  • Influencing Executive Leaders, Directors and Operational Management teams to drive a positive and proactive safety culture.
  • Lead and continually improve HSEQ governance frameworks, management systems and assurance programmes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, industry standards and ISO management systems.
  • Analyse performance data, trends and incidents to identify opportunities for improvement and drive corrective actions.
  • Lead investigations into significant incidents, ensuring lessons learned are embedded throughout the business.
  • Develop and implement innovative strategies that improve HSEQ performance and organisational resilience.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, regulators, professional bodies and key stakeholders.
  • Support wider business objectives by ensuring HSEQ considerations are integrated into operational decision making, business growth and continuous improvement initiatives.

What we need

We are looking for a proven senior HSEQ leader who has operated within a large, complex and multi-site organisation. You will have experience influencing senior stakeholders, managing sizeable HSEQ teams and embedding a positive safety culture across a workforce of several thousand employees and contractors.

We're less concerned about the sector you've come from and more interested in the scale, complexity and impact of your leadership experience. Whether your background is in FM, infrastructure, utilities, transport, manufacturing, engineering, energy, defence or another high-hazard environment, you'll bring the credibility, strategic capability and leadership presence required to succeed in this role.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree-level qualification in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, Risk Management or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow of IOSH with an up-to-date CPD record.
  • Extensive senior leadership experience in Health and Safety within complex operational businesses.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and recognised industry standards.
  • Experience leading assurance programmes, audits, investigations and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Proven ability to influence and challenge senior stakeholders while building strong working relationships.
  • Experience engaging with regulators, clients and industry bodies.
  • Demonstrable success leading and developing high-performing teams.

Desirable

  • Lead Incident Investigator qualification (TopSet or equivalent).
  • Management qualification (CMI or equivalent).
  • Environmental, behavioural science or project management qualifications.
