The UM-Flint Physical Therapy Department offers two outstanding programs including a professional DPT program and a PhD in Physical Therapy. The Physical Therapy Department at the University of Michigan-Flint prepares accomplished physical therapist practitioners, researchers, and educators through best practices in teaching and learning. The faculty are advancing scientific knowledge by engaging in rigorous scholarship, team science, and interdisciplinary research. Faculty have dedicated research space with state of the art equipment. The department is dedicated to serving our diverse local community. We are engaged in service learning including a student led pro-bono clinic.

The Physical Therapy Department is a part of the College of Health Sciences (CHS), located within the University of Michigan-Flint. UM-Flint is a regional institution in a revitalized urban setting located along the riverfront in downtown Flint. One of three campuses of the University of Michigan, we serve commuting and residential undergraduate and graduate students and offer over 100 undergraduate and over 38 graduate and postgraduate degrees. The UM-Flint campus is known for quality education, successful faculty-to-student ratios, and its collegial environment. We are seeking a creative, forward thinking leader who envisions the future of PhD in physical therapy education  and scholarship in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

The Flint Physical Therapy Department is seeking applications for a 12-month faculty position as a tenured associate or full professor who will also serve as the Associate Director of the PhD in Physical Therapy Program (ADPhD) in the Physical Therapy Department (PTD). The rank will be commensurate with experience and academic credentials, and will be subject to a tenure-upon-hire review and Regent approval for external candidates.

This position is a 12-month appointment at 100% effort, which will include 20% administrative effort as the ADPhD and 80% effort as a tenured faculty member.

The ADPhD is responsible for the PhD in Physical Therapy education program, including the dual DPT-PhD program in the PTD. 

The responsibilities of a tenured associate or full professor include instruction, scholarship and service.

This position has a projected start date of July 1, 2026. 

Responsibilites

Associate Director for the PhD in Physical Therapy Program - 20% Effort

This position encompasses the role of Associate Director of the PhD in Physical Therapy Program (ADPhD) in the Physical Therapy Department (PTD). The Associate Director is accountable to the faculty and staff of the Physical Therapy Department and reports directly to the Director of the PTD.

• Provide effective leadership for the PhD in PT program within the PTD
• Communicate effectively to advocate for the PhD Program and PT Department within the institution and communities of interest
• Develop and integrate the PhD Program academic program with the PT department strategic plan aligning with university-wide and college-wide strategic initiatives
• Serve as a member of the PTD Management Team

Physical Therapy Faculty Member - 80%

Teaching

• Provide course instruction based on expertise in physical therapist practice and needs of the Physical Therapy Department
• Maintain contemporary expertise in areas of course content taught through ongoing professional development
• Develop syllabi, learning experiences, and assessments of student learning
• Provide instruction in assigned didactic courses while working closely and collaboratively with other faculty
• Implement individualized learning objectives and engage students in active learning
• Assist with program self evaluation including periodic and ongoing policy and curriculum review
• Perform other functions in support of the Department as requested by the Director
• Serve as a Chair and/or PhD committee member for students in the PhD Physical Therapy Program

Scholarship

Develop and maintain a scholarly agenda according to the CHS scholarship requirements for Tenure-Track Faculty and accreditation criteria.

Service
