The Macro-Policy (MP) Division in the Strategy, Policy, and Review Department (SPR) focuses on policy-oriented, review, and analytical work in advanced, emerging market and developing economies. It is responsible for developing and steering the Fund’s strategic and operational surveillance priorities, including multilateral surveillance. Recognized for its innovative and dynamic approach, MP is often described as a “think-thank” within the IMF.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to and, with the appropriate skills and experience, to lead on various aspects of the MP work program, which includes:

• Conducting policy work related to Fund surveillance and analyzing the consistency between bilateral and multilateral policy advice.
• Participating in the 2026 Comprehensive Surveillance Review to shape the Fund’s surveillance strategy and operations for the next five years.
• Reviewing bilateral surveillance (country documents) and multilateral surveillance (flagships, G20 notes) products, collaborating closely with other divisional staff and Front Office senior reviewers in SPR.
• Producing high-quality analytical work on macroeconomic policies, integrated policy framework, resilient policy frameworks in the context of frequent shocks and transformational changes, structural and new industrial policies, cross-border spillovers, emerging markets, as well as other cross-cutting topics,
• Responding to management requests on surveillance topics, and

In addition, MP economists are typically assigned as SPR Economists to an area department country team, gaining valuable work experience by working on IMF program cases and in low-income countries.

Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standard, the ideal candidate will have: i) excellent technical skills and strong drive to produce analytical work on cross-cutting policy-oriented issues; ii) excellent oral and written communication skills; iii) the capacity and open-mindedness to identify creative and innovative solutions; and iv) strong motivation, work-management, and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with teams inside and outside the division. Prior operational experience in surveillance and/or program countries, and a demonstrated interest in policy and empirical analysis on macroeconomic and macro-financial issues would be an advantage.
