About the role
Description
We are seeking a Heavy Civil Laborer. The Heavy Civil Laborer performs physically demanding work on railroad and heavy civil construction projects, including track construction, grading, drainage, excavation, concrete work, and general site preparation. This role supports the safe and timely completion of infrastructure projects by working as part of a crew under the direction of a supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with construction, maintenance, and repair of railroad tracks, bridges, culverts, and associated infrastructure.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and small equipment (e.g., compactors, saws, jackhammers).
- Perform site preparation including clearing, grading, and excavation.
- Install and align track components such as rail, ties, ballast, and fasteners.
- Pour and finish concrete for foundations, culverts, and retaining structures.
- Perform flagging duties and adhere to all safety protocols and railroad regulations.
- Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks and railcars.
- Ensure tools and equipment are stored and maintained properly.
- Follow instructions from the foreman or supervisor and work cooperatively with other crew members.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum 1 year of heavy civil or railroad construction experience preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform strenuous physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and travel as needed.
- Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass background check, drug screening, and obtain railroad safety certification (e.g., eRailSafe).
Preferred:
- Experience working on Class I, shortline, or industrial railroads.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong work ethic and dependability.
- Basic mechanical aptitude.
- Knowledge of railroad track structure and terminology.
- Awareness of and adherence to safety procedures and practices.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed outdoors, often in remote or rural locations.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions and terrain.
- Frequent travel and extended stays on job sites.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
