About the role

Position Summary:  

The Music department seeks a passionate and energetic teacher to fill part-time teaching position beginning for the 2024-2025 Academic Year.  Candidates should be interested in being part of a collaborative group of teachers and working with highly motivated high school students in a diverse, mostly residential community. 

Schedule: Part-time exempt adjunct faculty, Academic Year.  Rehearsals held Monday and Thursday evenings 6:45-8:15pm and concerts.  Some other hours, including weekends upon arrangement.

Position Requirements

The team-oriented orchestra conductor will direct the PEA Symphonia, a foundational ensemble for students at the intermediate to advanced-intermediate level. This ensemble may be either a string orchestra or a symphonic orchestra depending on student musicians each year.  We seek colleagues interested in being part of a collaborative faculty of more than 40 instructors.

 Additional requirements:

  • A BA or BM degree is required, Master’s degree in music preferred.
  • 3 or more years of successful private studio teaching experience.
  • 3 or more years of professional performing experience.
  • Excellent studio teaching ability. Ability to teach technique, repertoire, and musicianship to students
  • Ability to create a positive and productive learning environment for high school age students.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching from a musically diverse body of work, including artists from historically marginalized identities.
  • Experience or interest in diversity and cultural competency education (conferences, seminars, in-service programs, coursework, independent study).
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
  • Willingness to enforce all school policies and rules governing student behavior.

Accountabilities 

In conjunction with the Director of Orchestras, program pedagogically and developmentally appropriate repertoire for the ensemble.  As needed, bow and mark parts effectively.

  • Direct rehearsals on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:45pm – 8:15 pm.
  • Conduct the Symphonia in orchestra concerts throughout the year as well as in any agreed-to additional performances planned with the department
  • Participate in hearing auditions for incoming students (held in September) to staff orchestras and bands
  • Use campus systems to report attendance, give student feedback through term-end written comments, and communicate with students and relevant campus adults.
  • Understand the Academy’s calendar and daily schedule and effectively use Academy systems for communication and course management.
  • Communicate student issues or concerns with Department Chair and/or Student’s Advisor or student’s parents when necessary.
  • Coach chamber music as interested/available.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on faculty performances as interested/available.
  • Participate in occasional department meetings, PEA faculty meetings, and other forms of shared governance.
  • Faculty are expected to demonstrate respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
