The Senior Automation Advisor is responsible for ensuring reliable communication systems, for the remote monitoring and control of Suncor Pipelines. These systems are within the Control Center building, between the control center and field sites in both USA and Canada, and communications between equipment at the field sites.

You will be a key member of the Sherwood Park team with a strong focus on ensuring high availability of computerized monitoring and control systems.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Seven years of industrial automation work experience as an Engineer, Technician, Technologist, or valid Journeyperson

  • A strong background in both Windows and Unix/Linux operating environments

  • A strong background of LAN and WAN technologies, protocols and configuration

  • Understanding of cybersecurity considerations in process control systems

  • Familiarity with several programming languages, (e.g. C, C++, C#, VBA / VB.NET, Python)

  • Experience with Server Virtualization

  • Experience supporting DCS or SCADA Systems.

  • Experience with process control protocols (e.g. Modbus, OPC-DA, OPC-UA, MQTT)

Responsibilities:

  • Support all components pertaining to SCADA including communications, networking, cyber-security, Pi-Historian, Pi Historian, and XHQ.

  • Take on progressively more challenging responsibilities in programming and data analysis, software application configuration and project work.

  • Initiate and/or conduct complex assignments requiring modification of established guidelines and procedures

  • Manage day-to-day as well as long term reliability of the SCADA system to ensure high data integrity and uptime

  • Verify and correct SCADA configuration on all new and modified installations during our project commissioning phase

  • Provide recommendations and budgetary numbers for required SCADA system upgrades and expansions

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve the reliability of our assets

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technical team members on SCADA processes and tools

Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our office in Sherwood Park

  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours and occasional travel based on business needs

  • Able to work with minimal supervision as well as providing on-call support during off hours

  • You will work out of our Pipeline Office in Sherwood Park

  • This position is safety sensitive
