This position is located on the Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, New York. You will be expected to work on the Ithaca campus, although you may be permitted to perform a portion of your work remotely.

The office of Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) provides official, accurate, and unbiased information and analysis about the university in support of institutional planning, decision-making, and reporting obligations. The office serves as an information clearinghouse for the university, producing the online Factbook and providing data about the university to governmental agencies. The office also engages in in-depth research projects and report writing on topics of special concern to the provost and other university leaders.

Under general supervision of the Associate Vice Provost for Institutional Research and Planning, this position plays a central role in enhancing the Institutional Research & Planning (IRP) curated data assets to facilitate the smart use of institutional data in strategic decision making by the academic leadership of the university.

  • Has a solid understanding of the purposes, goals, and processes of higher education.
  • The ability to act proactively and think creatively about the ways to bring data to bear on the questions facing higher education institutions.
  • The skills required to possess a good understanding of relational databases, as this position will be expected to extract and combine data from various sources, including enterprise-level data systems, data warehouses, and/or customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
  • A sincere commitment to teamwork, consistent attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.

Other required qualifications include: 

  • Master’s Degree and 3 to 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with SQL and/or scripting languages (e.g, Python, Java).
  • Experience with data analysis software (e.g. R, SPSS, Stata, SAS).
  • Willingness to adapt and an enthusiasm for learning new things.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as well as collaboratively as a contributing team member and with a variety of others.
  • Highly motivated, independent thinker, and possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Possess solid skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

Preferred qualifications for the position include:

  • Experience with university admissions. Experience understanding and working with Cornell’s student data. Experience with data visualization software (e.g. Tableau, Power BI).
