Maintenance Mechanic Technician

About the role
The Maintenance Mechanic is a day position at the Torrance polystyrene plant typically working four 10-hour days per week. The job will require some overtime work and extended hours on weekends, nights and holidays depending on plant needs. It is necessary for maintenance technicians to be on-call on a rotation basis. Knowledge and use of a PC work station, use of a computerized maintenance work order system, the ability to safely and responsibly troubleshoot and repair equipment in an operating chemical plant is required. Specialized maintenance and mechanical skills are needed as outlined below.

Primary Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair rotating and reciprocating equipment.
- General mechanical repair including welding, machining, and fabrication.
- Analyze and problem solve malfunctioning equipment (ex. differentiating between an equipment problem and a process problem).
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis for equipment failures.
- Lead/Participate in the site Preventative Maintenance Plan.
- Advocate for safe work and adhere to all safe work standards, procedures, and housekeeping practices.
- Operate aerial lifts and forklifts as necessary to complete work.
- Support minor mechanical design and project work as well as turnarounds.
- Provide work direction to contractor crews.
- Identify ways to reduce cost of repairing equipment while maintaining or increasing the quality of repairs and increasing the reliability of the equipment.
- Performing all duties with a high degree of dedication to safety and environmental stewardship.
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Ensure procedures are valid and up-to date.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma is required.
- Mechanical maintenance experience such as millwright, machinist and mechanical repair in a chemical, refining, or industrial plant. This plant experience should include troubleshooting and repair of pumps, compressors, gear boxes, fans, and blowers.
- Working knowledge of laser alignment techniques and detecting/correcting soft foot.
- Working knowledge of mechanical seals, flush pans and seal failure analysis.
- Pipefitting skills both welded and threaded.
- Precision measurement experience.
- Ability to read equipment prints, secure information from OEM manuals, and proficiency with measurement tools (micrometers, dial calipers etc.).
- Possesses basic computer skills to interface with maintenance management system and basic Microsoft office knowledge.
- Must be a self-starter and sell-motivated.
- Capable of working and communicating effectively with others.
- Able and willing to take call-ins and work overtime hours.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Work involves climbing stairs and ladders.
- Must be able to work at heights.
- Must be able to wear a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Preferences
- Capable of basic structural welding.
- Knowledge of basic machining including lathes, mills and presses.
- Experience of 5 years or more is desired.

- This position is part of Torrance manufacturing organization, and is located at the polystyrene plant in Torrance, California.
- Relocation assistance is not authorized for this position.
- Grade and salary level offered to the successful candidate will be appropriate to the job duties and commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
