Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor of Urban Secondary Education. This is a full-time, probationary/tenure-track position within the School of Urban Education and will start on August 18, 2025.
Responsibilities
Faculty members are expected to:
- Demonstrate the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level urban secondary education program courses effectively to a post-traditional student population rooted in strategies that guide teacher candidates successfully to licensure, and contribute to the meaningful assessment of student learning aligned to state licensure standards.
- Coordinate and manage undergraduate and graduate urban secondary education licensure programs with collaboration skills that will further strengthen and grow these programs, including working with arts and sciences colleagues in academic major departments to ensure program strength and cooperatively support teacher candidates.
- (NOTE: This work is done in addition to teaching and advising responsibilities through a reduced instructional credit load.)
- Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research.
- Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
- Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
- Engage in service to the university and community.
- Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.
- Provide excellent learning environments through in-person, online, and/or hybrid course modalities.
- Work regularly from the School of Urban Education primary campus for effective, in-person meetings and collaborative engagement with colleagues in the School, and students while also working remotely at times, as well as attend other meetings across the university.
Minimum Qualifications
- A minimum of a master’s degree in Secondary Education, Curriculum & Instruction, English Education, Math Education, Science Education, Social Studies Education, or Urban Education, with enrollment in a doctoral program for fields in which the doctoral degree is the terminal degree. Doctoral program must be successfully completed within 5 years to meet the requirement for tenure.
- Currently or previously licensed to teach middle and high school English/language arts, mathematics, science or social studies within the U.S.
- Extensive understanding and effective application of culturally responsive teaching strategies based on middle and/or high school teaching experience with BIPOC students from background whose incomes are below the federal poverty threshold in urban, inner-ring suburban, or tribal settings in which such students represented a majority or near majority of the student population.
- Demonstrated interest in faculty position that prioritizes teaching and emphasizes teaching excellence.
- A plan for scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research in the specified discipline(s), or related disciplines.
- Effective communication skills (written & verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students and colleagues who are culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse.
- Specific Technical, Computer, and/or Software skills (as needed).
Preferred Qualification
- A completed terminal degree (PhD, EdD) in Curriculum & Instruction, Secondary Education, English Education, Math Education, Science Education, Social Studies Education, Urban Education or closely related field.
- At least 5 years licensed teaching experience in urban grades 6-12 schools within the U.S.
