Overview:
In this senior role, you will be at the forefront of designing and managing comprehensive absence and disability programs, leveraging a unique blend of technical expertise, business acumen, and leadership skills. You will provide expert consulting to clients, lead complex projects, and help shape cutting-edge solutions that transform how organizations manage employee absence, disability, and leave programs. Qualifications & Experience
- Extensive Industry Experience: Minimum 20 years of experience in the absence and disability management industry. This should include deep familiarity with short-term disability, long-term disability, FMLA/leave of absence programs, and related benefit programs.
- Consulting Expertise: 15+ years of experience in a consulting or advisory role (preferably with a top-tier benefits consulting firm or insurance brokerage). Proven success in designing and managing large group disability or absence management programs.
- Claims & Underwriting Knowledge: Hands-on experience with disability claims administration and underwriting of group disability insurance. A strong understanding of insurance carrier operations, policy pricing, and claims processes will enable you to better advise clients and evaluate vendor performance.
- Sales & Client Relationship Skills: Proven sales track record with the ability to grow client accounts and drive business development. Demonstrated success in expanding client relationships and achieving revenue or growth targets in a consulting environment. Excellent client relationship management skills, with a consultative approach to identifying needs and proposing solutions.
- Project Leadership: Exceptional project management skills. Experience creating project plans, managing complex projects end-to-end, and leading multi-disciplinary project teams to deliver results on time and within budget. Able to juggle multiple client engagements while maintaining high quality standards.
- Leadership & Teamwork: Strong leadership abilities with experience managing, mentoring, or directing teams (including those in direct-line and matrix structures. Aptitude for guiding and developing junior consultants; able to inspire confidence and collaboration among colleagues at all levels.
- Analytical & Financial Acumen: High level of analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills. Proficient in analyzing benefit plan data, financial results, and vendor metrics to drive data-informed recommendations. Solid understanding of actuarial principles and cost drivers in absence and disability programs is a plus.
- Communication Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Able to present complex concepts and data insights in a clear, persuasive manner to executive-level clients. Experience leading client workshops, conducting training, and writing polished reports or proposals.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required (preferably in business, mathematics, public health, or related field with quantitative coursework). An advanced degree (MBA, MPH, etc.) or relevant professional certifications (e.g. CEBS, CPDM) are a plus.
- Licensing: Must either possess or be able to obtain applicable Life & Health insurance licenses within 90 days of hire, as required to consult on insurance products.
- Tech & Tools: Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint (advanced skills required for data analysis and presentation development). Familiarity with data analysis tools or HR information systems is beneficial.
- Travel Ability: Willingness and ability to travel approximately 35% of the time for client meetings, conferences, and business development activities. (Travel may include overnight trips and occasional international travel.)
