Job Description

As a key member of the Controls Engineering team, the Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for assisting in the Programming, Commissioning, and Startup of Programmable Logic Control (PLC) based automation systems and machine centers.  The position includes supporting the planning and creation of programs from scratch, for an integrated system.  A typical system includes an AB Logix PLC and Human Machine Interface (HMI).  The Senior Controls Engineer will help mentor and train new engineers within their functional group. The person in this role will work as part of an overall design team to specify control requirements and sequence of operations under guidance and supervision of the Controls Engineering Manager. 

The job duties will mostly be performed at ITW Hartness headquartered in Greenville, SC with travel required for startup and commissioning at customer facilities.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and create programs for advanced packaging material handling devices (drop packers, accumulation systems, etc.).
  • Work autonomously to develop and create programs to integrate multiple material handling devices to create an integrated production system.
  • Work with the Design Engineering team to specify control devices or hardware.
  • Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams assigned to develop new equipment and to develop changes to existing equipment with a focus on customer backed innovation. 
  • ·Work closely with the Controls Manger and Product Managers to set the technical direction of programming and control theory.
  • Drive the development of programming and design standards
  • Edit and interface HMI programs with PLC and system functions.
  • Specify and maintain I/O lists used to coordinate electrical design with program design.
  • Maintain Electrical Schematics after initial system assembly is complete.
  • Test, Debug, Modify, and Validate all system functions prior to shipment.
  • Lead Start-up and Commission activities for completed system at customer site for final customer approval.
  • Train ITW Hartness and customer technicians on the operation and program maintenance of the delivered system.
  • Proficient in and applies industry safety standards to designs.
  • Teach, Mentor, and Coach less experienced team-members and provide technical guidance.
  • Participate with Engineering Leadership staff to identify and drive design improvements in Quality, Cost, and enhanced customer experience.
  • Drive continuous improvement by utilizing ITW 80/20 Tools to streamline processes and procedures required for engineering release, procurement, and assembly of equipment.
  • Learn key software (design creation/publishing/storage).
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum 8 years of related experience within engineering field or a minimum 12 years of related experience in lieu of degree. 
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in controls engineering with strong experience in programming, installation, startup, and debug of integrated production systems.
  • Advanced ability to develop and create HMI programs
