About the role

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a talented and experienced journalist with an international and digital news background to lead standards across formats, helping News teams worldwide maintain our standards for integrity and objectivity while producing strong and compelling coverage that meets the needs of our customers and audiences. Reporting to the director of standards and based in New York, Washington, Chicago or Los Angeles, this standards editor will ensure our journalism follows AP’s News Values and Principles, which sets the industry standards for ethics in journalism, and will represent the company at public-facing events. You will have impeccable news judgement and a keen sense of fairness and diplomacy that supports AP’s nonpartisan, fact-based journalism. The standards editor will be able to make sound decisions in breaking news situations, while also working with the larger Standards Team to develop guidance around emerging issues that will serve AP and the news industry.

Responsibilities: In this role, you will be responsible for safeguarding AP stories from bias and inaccuracies across departments. You will work with AP newsgathering and production teams to resolve issues involving sources, story subjects, context and topic areas. You will work with photo, video and digital teams to deal with issues of sensitive and graphic content to determine what is acceptable to disseminate to AP customers and AP audiences. You will also connect with staff across formats and serve as a resource, answering questions about standards and participating in story discussions. You will review content across all formats that the AP produces and collaborate with other standards managers to create guidance for the News Department. In addition, you will help craft and lead standards and style training for the global staff.

  • collaborate with a diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats – text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • be responsive to standards needs – including at night and on weekends – as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

Preferred qualifications: Applicants must be experienced journalists who have dealt with complex standards issues in multiple formats. You should have a proven track record of strong decision-making and the ability to stand firm in defense of journalism principles.

  • All applicants must be authorized to work in the United States or able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
