Purpose
This position works closely with faculty, research engineers, research assistants and students. Performing laboratory and field experiments along with administration of the bituminous materials laboratory. Highly skilled and technical assignments involving the operation of specialized equipment relating to bituminous materials testing equipment.
Responsibilities
Assist faculty, research engineers, research assistants and students with the daily tasks relative to projects involving road building materials, asphalt and asphalt mixtures.
Perform maintenance, calibration, and record keeping of laboratory testing equipment.
Scheduling and administering laboratory and field equipment and experiments.
Order parts and maintain equipment and supplies.
Sample and material collection, fabrication and conditioning of test specimens.
Design and perform experiments of aggregates, asphalt and asphalt mixtures.
Collect, process and report experimental data.
Revise and develop improved specifications and testing protocols.
Maintain a clean, neat and safe working environment.
Train and supervise subordinates and students using the laboratories.
Demonstrate proficiency with following Superpave and TxDOT test methods by the end of the first year.
Required Qualifications
High school graduation or GED.
Minimum of four years of experience in testing construction materials, including one or more of aggregates, cement, concrete, asphalt binders and hit mix asphalt concrete.
Skills in construction and maintenance of equipment or apparatus for sampling and testing construction materials.
Skill in the use of standard shop machine and measuring tools.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
College-level courses in physics, civil, electrical or mechanical engineering, or related courses.
Knowledge of Superpave or other asphalt test procedures.
Experience in collecting field data or cores from pavement sections.
Level-1A certification through the TxAPA hot-mix center.
Scheduling and administering laboratory and field equipment and experiments.
