About the role

 

This is a Technical Writer-Editor-Illustrator position with The Marley Company, a parent company which provides administrative support to the SPX Corporation HVAC Heating businesses (such as WM Technologies, LLC, Marley Engineered Products, LLC, and Patterson-Kelley, LLC)  and includes all Weil-McLain® branded products.

Technical Writer-Editor-Illustrator creates, illustrates and edits documentation such as manuals, labels, wiring diagrams, etc. distributed from Product Engineering for new and existing products. Coordinates changes to and the distribution of technical literature electronic artwork. Controls proper storage of all documentation. Work with outside vendors to receive quotes, transfer data, and check quality of finished documents.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Develops, gathers, and disseminates technical information among customers, engineers, commodity managers, purchasing, designers, and suppliers to communicate complex and technical information in form of technical literature.  Edits for organization, content, technical accuracy, and style. Exercises good judgment in assessing the level of edits a piece of documentation requires at every stage of the process. Determines schedule and workflow to align with NPD project and ECO schedules for the timelines, as needed. Develops and executes internal and external review processes of documentation as needed.  Must have the ability to organize complex documentation and to collaborate closely with one or more designers for latest 3-D models. Works in conjunction with design teams, product engineers to create a variety of technical graphics. Takes information from text or data and creates illustrations that communicate this information concisely and accurately. This information could be research content, installation instructions or wiring diagrams for manuals and service instructions.

 

  • Determine the needs of end users of technical documentation.
  • Create new literature that answers all technical aspects of the product
  • Standardize format and ensure consistency amongst documents and media content.
  • Check and verify all facts and references.
  • Check and verify all graphics, figures, listings, part numbers, tables and other non-text items.
  • Meets all branding and marking guidelines
  • Creates an internal style guide and word lists for group use.  
  • Track Change Requests in Propel and revise documents as new issues arise.
  • Create review documentation for Engineers, Marketing, Technical Services, and Technical Training Associates as required by timelines.
  • Determine the illustration needs of the technical documentation.
  • Work in conjunction with our Compliance Team to following regulatory standards ANSI Z21.13, AMSE, CSA and some UL standards, and effectively communicate the message the literature needs to deliver.
  • Creates label artwork for printers.
  • Coordinate changes, distribute technical literature and electronic artwork to printing suppliers.
  • Should be familiar with a variety of software programs, including AutoCAD, Pro-Engineer, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Composer, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat and Distiller. CorelDraw 7X and Photo-Paint 7X for creating diagrams, labels and illustrations.
  • MS Outlook (e-mails for coordination), DropBox, and FileZilla for ftp file transfers.
  • Solid Works EPDM, JDE, and Propel required for moving files through ECO system and the JDE business for creation of part numbers for documentation.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Assist Weil-McLain Purchasing Department by procuring quotes for purchasing of French translations, coordination of all documentation to supplier, coordination of all related questions of translator. File transfer and final editing of documentation before releasing to business system and printers.
  • Assist Weil-McLain Purchasing Department by proofing technical literature before final printing.
  • Assist in training of associates in use of CR-ECO software, as required.
  • Some administration work in SolidWorks EPDM and Propel.
  • Management of digital Visual management board (VMB).
  • Perform additional assignments as specified by Director Product Engineering.
  • Must have an understanding of the company’s products, goals and priorities.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

 

  • Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Drafting Technology preferred
  • 5+ years editing software documentation, 3+ year illustrating software documentation
  • Desktop Publishing
  • Familiar with accepted general drafting and CAD practices and standards
  • SolidWorks and SolidWorks Composer
  • Working knowledge of PLM, preferably Propel E
