The SPLC is seeking a Deputy Director to join our Alabama State Office!
The Deputy Director will serve as the co-lead for SPLC’s Alabama State Office, working closely with the State Director to implement the Center’s mission and strategic goals. This position will provide leadership support for state-based operations and will continue building a comprehensive and integrated community advocacy and organizing model throughout the state of Alabama. The Deputy Director will establish systems and strategies to support the state office and to further SPLC’s mission.
As a key member of the Alabama leadership team, the Deputy Director will assist in managing local movement-focused staff, support strategic planning and implementation, and help maintain relationships with community organizations, and other key allies to build capacity and advance solutions that dismantle systems of oppression and foster a culture that allows all residents to thrive.
The Deputy Director will play a vital role in the day-to-day operations of the Alabama office, supporting the development of collaboration, collegial, and productive work culture while ensuring continuity of operations and strategic direction.
Who You Are
Experienced. Demonstrated experience in social justice and civil rights work with the Alabama racial movement ecosystem, understanding the issues impacting Black and Brown communities and a commitment to racial, social and economic justice. Proven supervisory experience of leading, training and developing teams.
Strategic Support and Leadership. Assist the State Director in developing, implementing, and monitoring SPLC state-based strategies and goals in alignment with local and regional priorities. This includes collaborating on strategic planning initiatives, supporting the leadership of a results-driven statewide team and helping to design and manage Alabama state-based strategies, initiatives and programs that advance the SPLC's mission throughout the state.
Relationship Building and Coalition Management. Support the identification, development, and maintenance of collaborative relationships with key partner organizations, funding partners, and community leaders to build capacity, collaborate, and advance shared solutions and strategies. Assist staff in building coalitions with state and local organizations, and activists, while representing SPLC at internal and external meetings, events, and convenings as assigned by the State Director.
Operations and Team Management. Supervise designated staff members and provide direct management support as assigned by the State Director, including recruiting, training, and developing staff to support organizational strategies, goals, and objectives. Develop and track budgets for field and outreach programs. Support performance management processes, professional development planning and team building initiatives while helping to create and maintain a culture of learning that regularly evaluates impact and outcomes and fosters collaborative, collegial, and productive work culture.
Program and Campaign Support. Lead or co-lead specific campaigns, initiatives, or program areas as designated by the State Director, supporting multi-strategy issue projects and campaigns within SPLC's flexible organizational model. Assist in developing and managing components of the state office budget.
Communication and External Support. Assist with developing communication strategies for Alabama campaigns, programs, and projects in collaboration with SPLC Communications staff and serve as backup spokesperson for SPLC in Alabama when designated.
Collaborative. Demonstrated ability to work with internal departments, external organizations, and stakeholders to execute specific strategies to advance the work of the Alabama State Office.
Flexible. Ability to work and travel as needed, evenings and weekends required.
