Positional Summary

The Associate Director for New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) provides vital leadership in Duke’s support of both new students and families. To support incoming students, the Associate Director will advise a team of paid student leaders in the design, implementation, and execution of Experiential Orientation, a signature program of QuadEx; contribute to year-long efforts to welcome new-to-Duke students; and work across the campus to build partnerships to support new students. Additionally, the Associate Director will lead the office’s student leadership efforts, including advising the Orientation Co-Chairs and Logistics Committee, organizing student leader recruitment, and designing student leader training.

 

Key Position Duties

Advisement – 35% of Effort

  • Advise up to 7 Experiential Orientation projects, including guiding student leaders in the design, implementation, and execution of Orientation Week.     
  • Advise two student Orientation Co-Chairs who guide the overall structure of the Orientation Board.   
  • Advise Logistics Committee who supports all Experiential Orientation Projects and Orientation at large. 
  • Support the ongoing development of student leaders as they learn project management, lead a team of peers, and execute a highly logistical program.

 

Program Planning - 30% of Effort

  • Design the year-long student leadership experience within New Student and Family Programs, including recruitment and training for 54 Orientation Board members and 300+ Orientation Leaders.
  • Advance orientation planning through the synchronization of Experiential Orientation Projects year-round.                 
  • Represent New Student and Family Programs in campuswide efforts to support student leadership throughout the academic year.

 

Administrative Responsibilities - 20% of Effort

  • Supervise one full-time staff member and one graduate student through their ongoing professional development, goal setting and effectiveness, and work/life balance.

 

Constituent Outreach – 10% of Effort

  • Design and conduct training sessions for students, faculty, and staff related to the matriculation process for new students.
  • Serve on rotation to support and respond to the general questions from students, families, campus partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the New Student and Family Programs office on select departmental and divisional committees as well as at national conferences and professional meetings.

 

Other- 5% of Effort

  • The Office of New Student and Family Programs is a hub of innovation and serves as an essential office within QuadEx. As such, there may be other opportunities to support Duke’s campuswide commitment to belonging, engagement, and well-being.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet departmental, Division, and University goals and objectives, as assigned by their Supervisor, Director, or respective designees.
