Purpose of Role: The Melting Crane Operator is responsible the safe and controlled operation of an overhead cranes within the entire department. All cranes in both the Melting and Pouring bay are operated from the floor with a remote control.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world class safety culture.

  • Must move loads for department, including AOD Vessels, ladles of molten metal, through the melting and pouring bays

  • Watch for people on the floor and use the sirens on the crane to alert personnel that the crane is moving

  • Weighs up scrap in charge buckets using magnet on crane

  • Position charge bucket over the furnace to safely charge

  • Maintains Scrap bay and surrounding areas per 6S and CI Standards

  • Clean Floor scales each shift with Crane Magnet

  • Uses the remote control to position the ladle of hot metal over the molds and slag off boxes

  • Ensure work area is clean and free of any hazards


Job Knowledge:

  • Participate in all Safety, Health and Environmental programs

  • Assures compliance 6S & CI methodology

  • Have a good work ethic

  • Have a good attendance record

  • Maintain a positive attitude in the workplace at all times

  • Crane Certification 

  • Participate in lean initiatives (6S, Visual Management, Kaizen)

  • Perform other duties as directed by company

  • Ensure all pours meet production & quality requirements

Education and Qualifications:

  • Education:  High school diploma/GED

  • Certifications/Licenses:  Crane operator certificate program through ESCO

  • Proficient computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft office applications and other Window’s based programs

  • Good reading, writing, mathematical, and verbal skills
