This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

 As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will be responsible for welding/joining processes used in the manufacture of liquid rocket engine hardware. You’ll be expected to develop, qualify, and continuously improve these processes to ensure design and manufacturing requirements are met across engine programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Challenge the status quo by identifying and implementing welding/joining process improvements to drive reductions in cost and processing time while maintaining technical requirements and quality.
  • Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to disposition nonconforming hardware.
  • Identify root causes of nonconforming hardware and work proactively to identify and implement corrective actions.
  • Interpret production drawings systematically, understanding the need for processes to meet established requirements.
  • Lead and coordinate internal and external process development activities.
  • Define and author material and/or process development and qualification plans in order to utilize novel materials and joining processes on liquid rocket engine hardware.
  • Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification.
  • Create, improve, and maintain special process specifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum B.S. in Welding Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years directly related welding and joining experience.
  • Experience with at least one of the following processes: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Orbital Tube Welding (OTW), Laser Beam Welding (LBW), Laser Cladding, and/or Vacuum Brazing.
  • Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of welding/joining processes.
  • Experience with implementing welding automation and/or mechanization.
  • Familiarity with standard methods of manufacturing, such as machining and inspections.
  • Experience interpreting NDT/NDE results (such as UT, RT, PT).
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD in Welding Engineering, Material Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in the production, manufacturing, and assembly of rocket hardware.
  • Experience working with Ni-based Alloys, Cu-based alloys, and/or other aerospace materials.
  • Demonstrated experience working in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with aerospace quality management systems supporting propulsion hardware.
  • Experience transitioning materials and processes from development to production.
  • Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and budgets.
