The Supervisory Billing Therapist is a high-impact, dual-function role responsible for delivering direct clinical care while driving documentation excellence, billing integrity, and compliance across the clinical team. This position maintains a productive caseload and provides clinical oversight by reviewing and approving documentation for under-licensed clinicians to ensure all services meet medical necessity, regulatory standards, and payer requirements.

This role is critical to revenue cycle performance, risk mitigation, and clinical quality, requiring a balance of strong therapeutic skills, operational discipline, and leadership.

 

Core Responsibilities

1. Clinical Productivity & Client Care


Maintain an active caseload aligned with organizational productivity standards.
Provide individual, group, and/or family therapy using evidence-based practices.
Develop, implement, and update treatment plans based on medical necessity and clinical progress.
Complete all documentation in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner.
Collaborate with clinical and operations teams to support continuity of care and outcomes.


 

2. Supervision & Documentation Oversight



Review, edit, and formally sign off on documentation completed by non-licensed clinicians.

Ensure all clinical notes, treatment plans, and assessments meet payer, state, and accreditation standards.
Provide direct, actionable feedback to clinicians to improve documentation quality and clinical reasoning.
Act as the final clinical gatekeeper for documentation tied to billing and reimbursement.
Support onboarding and ongoing training related to EMR, documentation standards, and compliance expectations.


 

3. Billing Integrity & Compliance


Ensure all billed services are supported by compliant, audit-ready documentation.
Partner with billing and revenue cycle teams to reduce denials, recoupments, and audit risk.
Conduct routine and targeted chart audits; implement corrective action plans as needed.
Maintain current knowledge of payer guidelines, CPT coding, and documentation requirements.
Identify reimbursement trends and proactively address gaps with clinical staff.


 

Performance Metrics (KPIs)

Clinical Productivity



Maintain 25–35 billable sessions per week 


90–95% documentation completion within 24–48 hours



Documentation Oversight


100% sign-off compliance for supervised staff within the required timeframe (24–72 hours)

95% audit pass rate on internal and external chart reviews



 

Qualifications


Active, unrestricted clinical license (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or equivalent)
3–5+ years of clinical experience in behavioral health
Proven experience or strong aptitude for supervising non-licensed clinicians

Understanding of medical necessity, documentation standards, and insurance billing

Experience working within EMR systems and multi-site or high-growth environments preferred

Base salary based on experience: 58,000 - 70,000, plus revenue share for completed appointments
QualificationsEducation: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Psychology or Social Work preferred.

Experience: Experience working in substance use is preferred but not required. Two years of experience in private practice setting preferred.

Licensure: Must be independently licensed and in good standing as an LPC, LCSW, or equivalent. Will accept provisionally licensed associates.

Additional Requirements: A thorough knowledge of The Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, DHS, State Regulations, and Federal Regulatory Standards. Complete TB testing, Drug Screening, and Background check upon being hired.
