The Instrumentation Department (IO) seeks an individual for a graduate student researcher position in photonics and electronics ASIC system designer to conduct R&D work in design and characterization of a communication system based on silicon photonics technologies and a hybrid electronic-photonic computing prototype. This work feeds into ongoing projects related to instrumentation and infrastructure the Electron-Ion Collider, Noble Liquid Detectors and novel computing methodologies. We invite eligible applicants for this position with the possibility to extend as needed by the project. This position is an on-site position with limited remote work possible. The ideal candidate will be required to design a first prototype of the communication system and the electronic-photonic computing circuits, have knowledge of both the electronic and the photonic processes and particularities, and show interest in both of those fields.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Design and test the silicon photonics data transmission links
- Design and prototype an electronic-photonic computing platform
- Operate and perform test of data transmission via a silicon photonic link
- Operate and perform appropriate tests of the hybrid electronic-photonic computing platform
- Work with the broader Instrumentation Department personnel on testing and characterization of devices and circuit component
- Contribute to design of ASIC and ASPIC within the scope of the data communication system and the photonics computing platform
Position Requirements:
- Graduate degree in an electrical engineering or closely related discipline
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of ASIC design process and flows
- Knowledge of ASPIC design process and flows
- Familiarity with PDKs and CAD/EDA tools for ASIC design
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Be enrolled in a PhD program in an electrical engineering or closely related field of study
- Research interest in CMOS circuit design, hybrid electronic-photonic design and photonic design
- Familiarity with measurement automation using but not limited to Python, MATLAB, VISA, and protocols
- Familiarity with optical and electrical testing in laboratory
- Familiarity with printed circuit board design
Other Information
This Full-Time temporary (up to 89 days) position is targeted to start June 15, 2024.
- Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $16.00 - $28.75 / hour. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group
This position is eligible for P/T extension during the academic year pending business need, job performance and funding.
