About the role

Job Overview

Under general direction of the Instrumentation and Controls Supervisor. The Senior Instrumentation and Controls Technician troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates and installs advanced control systems and instrumentation associated with the Energy & Utilities Services Thermal Energy production, distribution, and ancillary systems to ensure the continued supply of utility services to users; Assists in the supervision, training and inspection of the work of the Instrumentation and Controls Technician while on assigned shift. This position is responsible for ensuring that other business unit supervisory and management personnel remain informed of key events or situations impacting equipment and system operation, integrity, or reliability.

What you will be doing:

  • Troubleshoots, maintains, repairs, calibrates and installs advanced industrial and utility related control systems and instrumentation, including but not limited to district-cooling centrifugal chillers and associated support/distribution systems, district-heating steam boilers and associated support/distribution systems, potable water pump stations, reclaimed water pump station, sanitary sewer lift stations, stormwater pretreatment plant, source isolation deicing systems
  • Reads and interprets specifications, diagrams and schematics detailing instrumentation and control systems installation and maintenance requirements and operating parameters.
  • Modifies existing equipment by installing energy saving, operational and safety monitoring devices.
  • Tests faulty components and circuits using test equipment such as oscilloscope and multimeter; performs bench repair of components and circuits; replaces defective components and wiring; calibrates equipment according to specifications.
  • Maintains pneumatic, electro-mechanical, electrical and electronic measurement standards traceable to appropriate N.I.S.T. standards.
  • Calibrates measurement and test equipment/instruments using N.I.S.T. traceable standards.
  • Participates in design, development and implementation of system changes and upgrades.
  • Maintains records of repairs, calibrations and tests.
  • Writes or modifies existing computer programs.
  • Orders parts, supplies and equipment when authorized by supervisor.

What you need:

  • Associate degree in Instrumentation & Controls, Electronic Engineering Technology or related field.
  • Five (5) years of maintenance/repair experience on microprocessor-based pneumatic/electronic instrumentation and control systems.
  • Formal training in instrumentation and controls technology or a related field.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Two (2) years of industrial power plant experience in maintenance of high-pressure boilers, electrical distribution systems, chilled water/HVAC systems, and/or chemical water treatment and purification systems; AND Successful completion of the Instrumentation & Controls Technician Training Program in Energy & Utilities Services within 6 months of hire.
  • Possession of one of the following the certifications:
  • a. The State of Texas “Certified Wastewater Collection System Operator” Class I certification
  • b. The State of Texas Class D Water Works Operator certification
  • c. Universal Refrigerant certification from an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved provider
  • Ability to pass a color vision deficiency test.
  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
  • Ability to periodically work on-call outside of normal operating hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of methods, equipment and materials used in maintenance of High-Pressure Steam Boiler pneumatic/electronic instruments and control systems
  • Knowledge of methods, equipment and materials used in maintenance of Centrifugal Chiller pneu-matic/electronic instruments and control systems.
  • Knowledge of methods, equipment and materials used in maintenance of Hydronic System’s pneumatic/electronic instruments and control systems
  • Knowledge of the principles of microcomputer-based control systems and environmental energy equipment such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable in an industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the operation of electronic test equipment.
  • Knowledge of at least one computer programming language such as assembly or BASIC.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair malfunctions/defects in electronic and pneumatic equipment.
