Summary: Under the guidance of the Revenue Cycle Director the coder will perform coding of clinical visits for hospital and clinic accounts. They will follow all regulatory and governmental guidelines and adhere to established coding guidelines. Attention to detail and exceptional interpersonal communication and organizational skills are required. This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills and has frequent contact with hospital and clinic staff, providers and outside vendors.

Requirements

 Essential Job Functions:

· Accounts for coding and abstracting of patient encounters, including diagnostic and procedural information, significant reportable elements, and complications.

· Researches and analyzes data needs for reimbursement.

· Analyzes medical records and identifies documentation deficiencies.

· Reviews and verifies that documentation supports diagnoses, procedures and treatment results.

· Identifies diagnostic and procedural information.

· Audits clinical documentation and coded data, to validate documentation supports services rendered, for reimbursement and reporting purposes

· Assigns codes for reimbursements, research and compliance with regulatory requirements utilizing guidelines.

· Follows coding conventions. 

· Serves as coding consultant to care providers.

· Identifies discrepancies, potential quality of care, and billing issues.

· Researches, analyzes, recommends, and facilitates plans of action to correct discrepancies and prevent future coding errors.

· Identifies reportable elements, complications, and other procedures.

· Serves as resource and subject matter expert to other coding staff.

· Assists lead or supervisor in orienting, training, and mentoring staff.

· Provides ongoing training to staff as needed.

· Handles special projects as requested

Minimum Required Education/Experience: High School diploma or GED required. AAPC, AHIMA or CPC certification required. Previous experience in medical records, claims, billing or healthcare experience is preferred.

• Ability to engage with and work with other personnel and teams. 

• Ability to work with current computer software programs with advanced skills and competence (including keyboarding and troubleshooting). 

• Knowledge of office procedures including telephone etiquette and use of all office equipment (copier, fax machine, computer).

• Knowledge of regulatory, governmental and coding guidelines.

• Ability to read, understand, and implement policies and procedures.

Necessary Special Requirements: Must obtain annual flu vaccination and any job-specific immunizations. 

Unusual Demands: Work is subject to recurring and inflexible deadlines and frequent interruptions.
