Pay Rate

$109,530 - $161,028 Annually

Job Description

We have an opening for a Film Scanning & Digital Imaging Specialist. You will be responsible for digitization and archiving of motion picture film and other analog media types from the United States period of underground nuclear testing. You will assist in tasks related to scanning, media repair, metadata generation, content management, and reference assistance. You must demonstrate the ability to work well as part of a team, and to maintain a high standard of quality and attention to detail in multiple aspects of your work. The position is in the Nuclear Test Data program (Atmospheric Test Film Digitization) within Strategic Deterrence (SD) directorate.

The Film Scanning and Reanalysis Project is an ongoing project at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Its purpose is to scan and reanalyze ~10,000 unclassified scientific films of the atmospheric tests performed from 1945 through 1962. The intent of this new analysis is to provide higher value data for the Stockpile Stewardship Program. Most of the films were shot on black and white emulsions because of their higher optical density ranges. The scanning system uses an 8K B/W camera to capture the highest possible spatial resolution of the images. Many films were shot with rotating prism cameras running between 1500 and 3000 frames per second. Unfortunately, prism cameras tend to jitter (i.e., the image bounces up and down from frame to frame), thereby introducing noise into the data. To reduce this noise, the films must be stabilized before being analyzed. This has been accomplished using computer tools, such as Adobe After Effects. We are now looking to hire someone to complete the work on the unclassified films and start scanning the classified films that reside in the LLNL Archives.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

• Perform a range of complex responsibilities including the management, processing, protection, and control of unclassified and classified materials.
• Facilitate proper information marking and disposition.
• Track and report digitization metric efforts and communicate with Classified Digitization Program Manager (CDPM) to provide status of special projects and operation activities.
• Perform advanced operational activities of equipment functionality, maintenance, development of process procedures, workflows, setting priorities, tracking tasks to completion, and external vendor support.
• Write internal documentation and procedures for scanning operations and classified publications (supplemental to unclassified publications).
• Become proficient in operating the scanning equipment and transferring the data to our computer storage systems.
• Perform post-scanning image capture work, such as video stabilization and color correction.
• Produce multiple digital outputs from scanned film.
• Evaluate the quality of various films/plates currently in our possession and visually identify, inspect, handle, and clean the film/plate assets.
• Assume responsibility for setup, operation, repair and maintenance of film scanning equipment.
