Description

The Institute for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Society (IRES) at Chapman University is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the economics of religion. The fellowship will commence in Fall 2025.

The Institute for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Society (IRES) was founded at Chapman University in September 2009 by Dr. Laurence Iannaccone. IRES is unique in its aim to enhance our comprehension of the connections between religion, economy, and society through an interdisciplinary approach. The institute involves economists, sociologists, and other social scientists in the study of religion. This is accomplished through various means, such as scholarly publications, research seminars, training workshops, conferences, courses, online resources, and public lectures.

IRES is now the home of the Association for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Culture (ASREC) and a partner of the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA), establishing itself as the center of a rapidly expanding international network of scholars and students.

Responsibilities

This is a unique opportunity for highly promising scholars to conduct research at Chapman University's Institute for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Society (IRES). We are seeking scholars who can connect the study of religion to economics, political science, or sociology. Selected candidates will research at least one of these fields while at Chapman. They will also be expected to attend seminars, present at least one talk on their research, and contribute to other IRES activities. 

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in economics, sociology, political science, or related disciplines conferred between August 1, 2021, and August 1, 2025.
  • A submitted research paper.
  • Good communication including the ability to present a research talk.

Evaluation of applications will be based on the candidate's prior achievements, the potential of the proposed research project, and the anticipated benefits of conducting the project at IRES.
