Meet the Team: 

The Safety Management System (SMS) Director is responsible for developing, leading, and managing Torc’s Global Safety Management System (SMS) Program.  This position will lead the global implementation and management of the SMS program leveraging best practices.  The SMS Program Director will be responsible for continuing to build a global program that provides Torc with an effective approach to organizational safety.  The program will work cross-functionally to promote Torc’s safety culture, manage the governance process for safety decisions, ensure risk is managed appropriately, and implement assurance processes. 

What you'll do

  • Responsible for developing, leading and maintaining Torc’s SMS program globally
  • Lead the investigation and analysis of safety incidents using root-cause methodologies and driving continuous improvement
  • Establish and maintain effective safety policies, procedures, and processes that promote a strong safety culture
  • Manage the governance processes focused on assisting the cross-functional teams through the process and content required
  • Establish risk assessment processes to drive consistency in the safety assessments and support decision-making
  • Collaborate with the Quality Management team to properly integrate the SMS program
  • Lead responding to government inquiries related to fleet operations and product safety globally
  • Work with the Quality and Legal teams to conduct appropriate audits and assessments of safety-related processes, procedures, and evidence
  • Identify team competences needed to lead, support and manage a team of 5-10 direct reports
  • In partnership with People Operations, supervisory responsibilities include leading continuous goal setting, career pathing and professional development, tracking competencies, employee team building and training, performance management, scheduling and assigning work, resource management and controlling expenses, and enforces systems, policies, and procedures
  • Proactively manages coaching, employee relations, and conflict while representing Torc’s core values
  • Identify hiring needs, partner with People Operations and Talent Acquisition, and assist in the recruiting, screening, interviewing, selection, hiring and new hire onboarding processes for talent across multidisciplinary teams.  Recommends salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, or terminations
  • Accomplishes department objectives by supervising staff and organizing and monitoring work processes with the highest degree of quality and safety

What you’ll need to Succeed: 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required
  • 10+ years’ experience in automotive safety and regulatory (related industries will be considered)
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and managing safety and compliance programs; experience in safety investigations including accident and/or cyber-security attack response, investigations, closure, and preventative measures
  • Knowledge of root cause analysis methods and how to apply them an an understanding of risk assessment methods and how to apply them
  • Experience in managing and responding to government inquires and significant knowledge of federal and state safety and operating regulations and processes
  • Desire for continuous learning, collaborative workstyle, and good judgment and decision-making skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills to plan, develop, coordinate resources, prioritize effectively, and maintain competing demands simultaneously with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to build trust and strong working relationships
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways

Bonus Points! 

  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in a related field of study preferred
  • Experience with commercial trucking preferred
  • Experience with cybersecurity preferred
