Nursing responsibilities include:

• The screening and pre-operative care for each recipient is quite extensive. Ensure that all appropriate tests have been performed and pre-operative immunosuppression has been started for each recipient prior to surgery
• Primary individual responsible for the kidney donor colony and renal transplant ward Ensure that 3-5 donor cats are always available
• Ensure that appropriate screening has been performed on each kidney donor Scheduling and coordination with other services (blood bank, anesthesia, ICU, surgery technicians) for each transplant surgery; submit all requests
• Learn all aspects of the transplant procedure and assist with the preoperative preparation of the recipient and donor and the surgical procedure if needed
• Assist with post-operative care of the transplant patient in the ICU and once the patient is transferred to the renal transplant ward
• Ensure that cyclosporine levels are performed regularly on each recipient in the hospital and following discharge
• Perform patient discharges with owners
• Nurse practitioner appointments for transplant cases that need either routine care or need to be seen because of a specific complication
• Assist with management of historical transplant patients coming to Penn that need to be seen through surgery or through other services
• Assist with research projects involving the transplant donors and recipient
• If the transplant service is slow and there are no administrative duties that need to be performed on that day (i.e. phone consultation) the transplant nurse may assist in providing additional nursing coverage as needed. This will be Under the direction of the Director of Nursing after consultation with Dr. Aronson.
