Position Overview

Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a Stationary Engineer Chief who leads and oversees all phases of physical operations and maintenance at Taylorville Correctional Center, ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant management of facilities and utility systems. The role is responsible for directing preventive, emergency, and security maintenance programs, monitoring critical utilities, and supervising the upkeep of boilers, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. As a working supervisor, this position provides guidance, training, and performance management for staff while ensuring compliance with sanitation and safety standards. Additionally, the role advises administration on major repairs and construction projects, manages reporting to state agencies, and drives operational excellence through effective planning, resource management, and staff development. Essential Functions

  • Plans, organizes, directs, evaluates, manages and coordinates all phases of a complex program of physical operation and maintenance at Taylorville Correctional Center including emergency, security and preventative maintenance and utility distribution systems.
  • Serves as working supervisor.
  • Advises institution administration of needs and feasibility of major repairs, new construction projects, and large equipment purchases.
  • Prepares maintenance cost reports, requisitions, personnel reports, monthly, semi-annual and annual reports.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires seven (7) years of experience in the operation of a commercial OR institutional power plant OR as a skilled craftsman in the mechanical or building trades.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least ten (10) years of work experience in electrical, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, mechanical, and/or sewage systems.
  • Prefers at least ten (10) years of knowledge of tools and equipment used for maintaining refrigeration, air   conditioning systems, plumbing, electrical systems, and/or boiler systems.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience supervising, assigning, and reviewing work of staff.
