About the role

Position Summary

The PBX Operators answer calls coming into the switchboard as well as calls to the doctor's answering service.  They handle radio communications for the engineering staff and monitors ambulance service.   They monitor the automated alarm systems and respond appropriately based on the situation.  They announce all Code Blue, Code White, Code Pink, emergencies, and drills over the PA system for both buildings.  They maintain numerous logbooks on different aspects of hospital operations.   Other duties assigned. 

Qualifications/Experience 

Education:  

High School Diploma or GED required.  Associate degree Preferred. 

Experience:  

3 years' experience as a PBX Operator preferred.

Recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of malfunctions to Communications Supervisor

Has good knowledge of the hospital and how it functions.  Knows the responsibility of different departments for the purpose of relaying messages in a timely and accurate fashion.

Demonstrates an understanding of the policies and procedures of the Communications Department and the hospital.

Able to handle a wide variety of calls in a timely and accurate manner while staying within the guidelines of the department.

Takes messages for doctors accurately and relays according to each doctor’s preference, within the guidelines of the answering service procedures.

Refers patient calls and messages to on-call doctor.  Does not disturb doctors on their days off.

Ensures that messages are relayed to the appropriated doctors in a timely manner.

When requested, makes every attempt possible to contact a doctor as required in by the answering service guidelines.

Responds to the needs of any department and assists them in reaching a doctor when needed.

Maintains a positive attitude and gives each call the attention and service that is expected. 

Knows the procedures for all "Code" situations and responds accordingly

Knows the procedures for fire and disasters drills and the procedures for the actual events.

Uses a pleasant tone and is helpful to the callers.

Ensures patient satisfaction by making sure they receive their calls and by assisting them with communications services as needed.

Is willing to work with doctors in giving messages as well as placing or receiving calls in order to promote a good working relationship with the medical staff.

Gets along well with other employees and works well with co-workers.

 

Always maintains patient confidentiality.

Readily performs job duties while working with little direct supervision.

Maintains accurate call logs.

Documents and reports any questionable situations that may arise during the course of the shift

Readily incorporates into normal work routine any short-term changes to established procedures as directed by management.
