We are seeking an accomplished Director to lead, develop, and inspire our Staff Counsel teams. This role requires a hands-on people leader with a proven track record of managing attorneys and support staff, fostering engagement, and building a culture of excellence and accountability. The ideal candidate will balance strong litigation expertise with the ability to motivate, mentor, and grow high-performing teams across multiple locations.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & People Management

• Lead a team of attorneys, paralegals, and support professionals, setting clear goals, expectations, and performance standards.

• Build and sustain a positive, collaborative, and inclusive team culture.

• Provide coaching, feedback, and professional development to drive career growth and performance improvement.

• Identify and nurture emerging leaders within the organization, creating robust talent pipelines for future succession needs.

• Partner with HR and senior leadership on staffing, retention, and workforce planning initiatives.

Strategy & Legal Oversight
• Develop and execute litigation strategies that align with departmental and enterprise goals.

• Collaborate with senior leadership to influence department policy, ensure compliance, and align legal priorities with business objectives.

• Drive operational excellence through data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives.

Case Management
• Oversee the lifecycle of litigation cases from initiation through resolution (trial, settlement, or appeal).

• Monitor team caseloads, performance metrics, and outcomes to ensure optimal results.

Budget & Resource Management
• Manage office budgets, allocate resources effectively, and identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality.

Stakeholder & Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Serve as the primary liaison between Staff Counsel and internal business partners.

• Provide strategic counsel on legal risk and litigation trends impacting the organization.

Continuous Improvement & Compliance
• Champion best practices, tools, and technologies that enhance litigation and operational effectiveness.

• Ensure compliance with internal policies, ethical standards, and all applicable legal requirements.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience
• Actively licensed to practice law in at least one state and in good standing; must maintain all CLE requirements.

• Minimum 10 years of litigation experience, ideally in insurance defense or personal injury; related experience in other areas will be considered.

• Demonstrated success managing teams of attorneys and/or legal professionals — including hiring, performance management, and development.
