About the role

Description

The Faculty Tutor/Student Success Coach serves as a dedicated faculty member providing individualized and group-based student success services that promote academic achievement, retention, progression, NCLEX readiness, and timely graduation. Working collaboratively with course faculty, student services, and accessibility support services, this faculty member delivers evidence-informed coaching and tutoring strategies designed to enhance students' learning skills, test-taking performance, learning development, and overall success in the BSN.

While course faculty remain responsible for content-specific instruction and remediation within their courses, the Faculty Tutor/Student Success Coach provides supplemental support focused on academic success strategies, learning science, time management, study skills, NCLEX preparation/benchmarking, clinical reasoning development, accommodations guidelines, and navigation of available student support resources.

The position works with Faculty Affairs (Experiential Learning Coordinators), Department Chairs (Course Coordinators), and various Task Forces/Working Groups (NCLEX, Benchmarking/Bac Fac) for continuous program and quality improvement opportunities as the role evolves.

Primary Responsibilities

Student Success Coaching

• Provide individualized and group academic coaching to students experiencing academic difficulty or identified as at-risk for progression.

• Facilitate personalized success plans addressing academic performance, study habits, time management, stress management, and goal attainment.

• Assist students in identifying barriers to success and implementing evidence-based strategies for improvement.

• Monitor student progress and maintain appropriate documentation of outreach, coaching interventions, and outcomes.

• Refer students to appropriate University resources, including counseling, wellness services, academic support programs, and student accommodation services as needed.

Academic Support and Tutoring

• Facilitate individual and small-group tutoring sessions focused on:

  • Test-taking strategies
  • Clinical judgment and critical thinking
  • NCLEX-style question analysis
  • Learning and study strategies
  • Academic writing and professional communication

• Collaborate with course coordinators and faculty to identify common areas of student challenges and develop supplemental learning resources in response.

• Provide coaching during practice sessions for skills mastery.

• Offer workshops and review sessions addressing success skills across the curriculum.

NCLEX Readiness Support

• Assist students in developing longitudinal NCLEX preparation plans.

• Provide coaching on question interpretation, clinical judgment models, and test-taking approaches.

• Analyze performance data from standardized testing and NCLEX preparation products to identify student needs.

• Support implementation of college-wide NCLEX success initiatives.

Support for Students with Accommodations

• Collaborate with Student Accommodation Services (SAS) personnel and faculty to support students with approved accommodations.

• Assist students in understanding and effectively utilizing accommodations within the nursing curriculum.

• Educate students regarding available support services and learning strategies that complement approved accommodations.

Early Intervention and Retention Efforts

• Facilitate early-alert and academic progression initiatives.

• Identify trends related to student performance and retention.

• Support students returning from academic leave, progression plans, or remediation requirements.

Collaboration and Program Development

• Collaborate with course coordinators, faculty, student services staff, faculty affairs, and academic affairs leadership to align student support efforts.

• Participate in program evaluation activities related to retention, progression, graduation, and NCLEX outcomes.

• Develop and maintain academic support resources, workshops, and online learning materials.

• Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives supporting student success.

Reporting

• Track and report data on usage of coaching services, NCLEX pass rate, etc.

Teaching and Service Expectations

• Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and campus and college student success initiatives.

• Engage in professional development related to academic coaching, student success, nursing education, learning science, and NCLEX preparation.
