Organizes, implements and facilitates a variety of programs at an indoor or outdoor recreation center or facility or swimming pool. Plans activities, events and programs. Supervises programs to ensure they are run in a fun, organized and safe way. 

In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).

Examples of duties

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Prepares daily, weekly and seasonal schedules of events and activities
  • Organizes and instructs groups in phases of recreational programming such as dancing, music, crafts, activities, sports and games
  • Serves as advisor or instructor for groups formed to participate in a particular type of activity; instructs members of the department staff and volunteer leaders
  • Orders supplies, materials, equipment and other materials pertaining to an activity in order to assure maximum satisfaction for the participants
  • Participates in recruiting, training and supervising seasonal and part-time staff, specialists and volunteers
  • May check, schedule, maintain and oversee use of facilities, equipment and supplies
  • Prepares manuals, rules, announcements, bulletins and promotional materials as directed Maintains operation and recreation activity records and equipment inventories
  • Performs related work as required

Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, six (6) or more months of additional training.
  2. Have completed two (2) years of college course work is preferred.
  3. One (1) to three (3) years' experience in planning, promoting, organizing and conducting recreation activities. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.         
  4. Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  5. If assigned to a licensed afterschool facility, must enroll in the Florida 40-hour Child Care Introductory Training for School-aged children within ninety (90) days from the date of assignment and successfully complete such training within one (1) year.
  6. If assigned to a licensed afterschool facility, may be required to obtain the Child Development Associate credential within one (1) year after successful completion of the Florida 40-Hour Child Care Introductory Training for school-aged children.
  7. If assigned to a licensed afterschool facility, may be required to obtain a Directors credential within six (6) months after receipt of the Child Development Associate credential.
  8. If assigned to a facility with a swimming pool, may be required to obtain a Certified Pool Operator Certification, American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue Certification and Lifeguard Management Training Certification within one (1) year.
  9. If assigned to oversee transportation, must possess a current and valid State of Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement and passenger endorsement.
  10.
