About the role

Entry-Level Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is seeking a Entry-Level Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer to join the Flying Qualities and Autonomy Technology Group as part of the Vertical Lift Division located in Ridley Park, PA.

We participate in all phases of design and testing, and support all of Boeing’s vertical lift aircraft, including the Apache, AH-6, Chinook, MH-139, V-22 Osprey, and other developmental aircraft.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analyze air vehicle stability and control characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

  • Apply control theory to the design of control laws that achieve desired characteristics for dynamic control response, gust or disturbance rejection, system failure robustness, and loads considerations.

  • Develop and validate linear and nonlinear mathematical analysis and simulation models of air vehicle and subsystems using theory and test data, including wind tunnel and flight test.

  • Support the design of new and modified rotorcraft configurations from a stability, control, and handling qualities perspective.

  • Perform wind tunnel testing, pilot-in-the-loop flight simulation, hardware in the loop laboratory testing, and flight testing in support of vehicle design and analysis.

  • Apply tools such as Matlab/Simulink and other modern and legacy programing languages in both Windows and Unix-based environments.

  • Collaborate with test pilots and with engineers in other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, dynamics, avionics systems, structural design, and crew systems design, to optimize vehicle level characteristics.

  • Occasional travel to support flight testing at off-site locations. These test sites could include cold weather sites, high altitude sites, or ships at sea.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and occasional weekends when necessary to support test activities.  (Note:  These unique support requirements are infrequent, but possible)

This position is expected to be 100% on-site at the Ridley Park, PA location.

This position requires ability to travel 10% of the time (Note: This typically requires a Driver’s License)

This worksite also participates in Boeing’s optional “9/80” schedule, whereby an employee would work 80 hours over 9 days, and take every other Friday off.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. Final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience, activities, and coursework which demonstrate an interest in Flight Vehicle Dynamics, Aircraft Stability & Control, Control Law Design, Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC), Simulation and Modeling, and/or Aeromechanics

  • Engineering coursework and experience in linear stability analysis including aero-servo-elastic effects.

  • Completion of rotorcraft-centric engineering courses, or other engineering-level exposure to rotorcraft concepts and characteristics.

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, with coursework in control systems and flight-related concepts.

Typical Education and Experience: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), computer science, engineering data science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor), or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent qualifications. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Relocation:

Relocation assistance is not a negotiable benefit for this position. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.
