Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate to join our Facilities teams this summer as a Mechanical Engineering intern. The intern will work under the mentorship of the Facilities Manager and learn facilities engineering skills by engaging in engineering design and project engineering tasks as part of Western Digital’s Corporate Real Estate & Workplace (CREW) engineering team. The selected candidate will be able to practically apply engineering knowledge to design and planning of projects for mechanical system infrastructure improvements, as well as participate in feasibility studies and engineering to improve systems efficiency and reliability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop knowledge and skills to assist in basic facilities engineering design for a variety of facility infrastructure systems such as, HVAC, steam boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, clean dry air systems, air handlers, humidification systems, and associated instruments and controls.
  • Learn key energy efficiency and reduction principles, methods for calculation of estimated energy cost savings, utilities rebate programs for energy reduction.
  • Learn basic mechanical engineering design, code requirements and project applications.
  • Assist in developing and updating P&IDs and associated sequence of operations for major systems in B002.
  • Conduct technical assessments of site equipment and system energy efficiency, capacity, reliability and other factors to identify potential cost reductions, performance and reliability improvement opportunities.

PROPOSED PROJECTS TO BE WORKED ON:

  • B006 Gemini Cleanroom Facility Reconsolidation Study
    • Review cleanroom mechanical systems, perform energy & water calculations and ROI calculations
  • B014 Facility Reconsolidation
    • Review building mechanical system and perform energy & water saving calculations

Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Current student, pursuing a BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Facilities Engineering  and graduating between December 2025 and June 2026.
  • Candidates based in the San Jose, CA area will be prioritized in the process. 
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA

SKILLS

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technical skills in area of study
  • Interest in HDD, semiconductor, components, nonvolatile memory, or tech industry
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications 
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD is a plus
