Assistant/Associate/Clinical Professor

Position Function:

The College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, invites applications for a clinical track assistant/associate/full professor position in Ambulatory to service farm animal species. This position is housed in the Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine.

Farm Animal Ambulatory

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include teaching in the professional program and participation in the Ambulatory service. It is expected that this position will allocate approximately 60% of time to clinical service, composed principally of beef cattle, dairy cattle, and small ruminants. This position includes shared emergency duty in the ambulatory service (farm animals and horses). A 10% FTE allocation will be toward didactic teaching within the CVM and 5% to academic service (e.g., committees, taskforces, and student interviews).
This position will have a 25% FTE allocated to the Center for Rural Veterinary Practice, which is a College level initiative. This position will help to develop and participate in a new Rural Veterinary Practice Certificate for veterinary students in the DVM program, and provide outreach to practicing veterinarians and producers aimed at promoting viable rural veterinary practices. They will interact and mentor new veterinarians and be a role model for rural mixed animal practitioners. They will develop and deliver unique DVM student learning activities and participate in student mentoring.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and clinical service. The present Ambulatory caseload is 40% cattle (mostly beef), 40% equine, and 20% small ruminants. While research is not a required element, this position is expected to participate in collaborative scholarship.
Building plans for a new food animal hospital and outpatient facility are being finalized. This facility will enhance animal flow and will allow outpatient and inpatient services to be conducted simultaneously. It will also serve as a base for the Center for Rural Veterinary Practice with space for active teaching laboratories and study.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent. Prior private practice experience with knowledge of veterinary practice management is required. Prior practice ownership is desired but not required. Board eligibility/certification in an AVMA approved specialty is not required. A graduate degree beyond the DVM is not required but is a plus. This position will work with nine faculty in the Ambulatory and Food Animal sections, so demonstrated collegiality and teamwork is required. Excellent individual and group communication skills are required. The ability to do sustained physical activity associated with large animal practice is required, as is a valid drivers license. The ability to attain a regular veterinary license in Mississippi is required, as well as maintenance of Category 2 veterinary accreditation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent telephone and email communication skills, especially related to client service.
Must be capable of working in a team environment comprised of doctors, staff and students to provide veterinary care of patients and aid in the instruction of veterinary students and veterinary technology students.

Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
