Position Overview

This position is accountable for the design, technical expertise, and interagency coordination of roadway landscape features and activities to ensure safety, compatibility, aesthetics, and preservation of natural resources and department assets within the highway system. This includes coordination and monitoring of the districts integrated roadside vegetation management plans to provide a functional statewide plan that meets the department's management and habitat conservation goals.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares a yearly roadside development plan for the district roadsides and rest areas.
  • Assists with revisions and implementation of district and state integrated roadside vegetation management plans.
  • Oversees the construction of landscape projects and contract maintenance projects.
  • Evaluates and selects appropriate chemicals for maintenance use.
  • Provides expertise and training to various bureaus and non-departmental personnel involving roadside activities.
  • Assists the districts in coordinating local special interest groups in habitat, conservation, and beautification projects.
  • Performs habitat inspections, monitoring, and reporting as required by agreement with the University of Illinois to maintain IDOTs enrollment in the Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree majoring in environmental science, agriculture science, wildlife biology, or natural resources PLUS two years of experience in rights-of-way vegetation management, OR Eight years of experience in rights-of-way vegetation management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of turf and plant management including pesticides, plant species, and disease and pest management.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with department and industry staff.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills preferably in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and ArcGIS.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Illinois Department of Agriculture Pesticide license (any type) or equivalent from an adjacent state (KY, IA, IN, MO, or WI).
  • Must be able to obtain Illinois Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator license in Right-of-Way, Turf, Ornamental, and Aquatics within 5 months of employment.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Frequent statewide travel with occasional overnight stays.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
