The Specialist, Internal Communications is responsible for communicating the USO’s mission, values, and activities within the organization. The specialist will support multiple facets of the organization’s strategies to keep USO staff, advisory board members and volunteers apprised about organizational priorities and changes, program activities and outcomes, progress towards strategic priorities and goals, and mission engagement opportunities. The position reports to the Vice President of Communications.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (*Essential Duties)
- Communicate and promote USO program activities and outcomes, organizational priorities and changes, and progress towards strategic priorities and goals to volunteers, employees, and advisory board members.
- Oversee internal communications channels to ensure on-time delivery of messages and information to employees and volunteers.
- Develop, write, and publish editorial content regarding internal efforts to carry out the USO’s mission and its programs, projects and activities. Draft, edit, and distribute internal company announcements and newsletters.
- Serve as content manager of USO Connect, the USO’s proprietary online internal communications portal, ensuring content is up to date and property maintained by the USO departments responsible for its various content categories.
- Maintain internal USO calendar of activities and events.
- As necessary, present and inform regions and centers of campaigns and major media initiatives.
- Identify, plan, and prioritize PR and media resources to communicate and raises awareness of USO programs, campaigns and activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- This is an in-person position located in Arlington, VA.
Job Specifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications or a related field.
- 3+ years of work experience in a communications role. Relevant experience in a non-profit, military, multicultural and/or global organization preferred.
- Experience developing and supporting employee and internal communications programs and activities.
- Strong understanding of public relations strategies and tactics along with an interest in current events, news, and trends.
- In-depth knowledge of web publishing technologies, digital marketing tools, online media applications, user experience best practices, website analytics platforms and social media channels and interest communities.
- Ability to achieve desired results while working collaboratively in a team environment. Willingness and ability to work non-standard hours as needed.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to interact with USO Leadership, the general public and military audiences at a variety of levels with integrity and professionalism.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment related to controversial and/or culturally sensitive subjects. Ability to handle confidential information with tact and poise.
- Working knowledge of basic business and accounting functions – e.g., project management and budgeting.
- Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, with the ability to quickly and easily adapt to changing organizational needs.
- Proficiency using computers and electronics equipment. Working knowledge of various software, applications and programs, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to obtain and maintain proper credentials necessary to access USO Center locations and facilities including but not limited to security, credit and/or background screening, SOFA status, valid driver’s license.
- Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission.
