JOB DESCRIPTION 

TITLE: CLASSROOM ASSISTANT/PARAPROFESSIONAL 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

1.  High school diploma or equivalent, some college preferred. 

2.  Must meet ISBE Licensure requirements for student interaction 

3.  Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all staff and the public 

4.  Uses/operates computer or digitized equipment related to the position/job. 

5.  Demonstrates proficient use of the English language in written and oral forms 

6.  Able to demonstrate patience and gain student cooperation. 

7.  Able to assist in the implementation of an instructional program and to participate in monitoring and  

     ensuring appropriate student behavior to all students. 

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or designee 

SUPERVISES: Supervises students as assigned 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

To assist classroom teachers in providing individualized and/or small group instruction and supervision for all students.  Classroom Assistants provide much needed support to classroom teachers and students. They are instrumental in  providing instructional support. Assistants enrich the teaching of remedial lessons by providing individual support to  students on a consistent basis. Classroom Assistants assist students in successfully learning the daily lesson objectives.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

1. Provide individual help and assistance to students as requested 

2. Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or  

    supervised role-playing methods. 

3. Reinforce learning objectives to small groups of students or individuals.  

4. Help maintain order in the classroom; monitors students to keep them on task.  

5. Assist the classroom teacher in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the  

    maturity and interests of the students. 

6. Supervise the independent study of students. 

7. Collect and organize teaching materials for the classroom teacher as needed. 

8. Assist the teacher in preparing the classroom for the opening of school and in storing materials and getting the  

    classroom ready for closing of school. 

 9. Assist in monitoring and supervising students during field trips and special school events. 

10. Supervise outdoor recess periods, lunch periods and bus supervision before and after school as assigned and  

      enforce expectations for student behavior.  

11. Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information. 

12. Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor. 

 

PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF THE JOB: This job may require the following: spending a portion of each day outdoors  on the playground in a variety of weather conditions; occasional lifting of weights up to 50 lbs.; able to walk and stand  for extended periods of time.

 

GENERAL COMMENTS: This job entails working with students in classroom and campus settings.
