Micrometeoroids and Orbital Debris Systems Engineer II – Lunar Permanence (R39443)
Blue OriginAbout the role
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will perform as a specialist Systems Engineer (SE) in the field of micrometeoroids and orbital debris (MMOD). The MMOD SE plays a critical role in defining and maturing shielding for Blue Origin’s lunar landers through their design and verification life cycle. Your focus will be on MMOD analysis, hyper-velocity ballistic test development, and flight hardware definition. The Structures and Mechanisms subsystem is a hardware-delivery-focused subsystem, and the SE is expected to have relevant testing and hardware experience. Additionally, with Blue Origin’s vision to enable crew exploration of the Moon, subsystem safety assessment is paramount and will be a key aspect of the SE role given its systemic reach and implication.

Some travel may be required to support hardware development and/or hypervelocity impact testing. Interviews for this position will include a technical assessment specialty knowledge, software development, and analysis skills as well as fundamental spacecraft structures and mechanisms.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop finite element models and probabilistic risk assessments using commercial and NASA analysis codes.
- Define hypervelocity impact test programs including specifying test parameters, coordinating with suppliers, coupon specification and build oversight, and test data analysis.
- Own and collaborate on trade studies balancing integrated system considerations and MMOD risk. Identify technical solutions to integrated problems and document substantiation.
- Maintain subsystem Probability of No Penetration technical performance metrics.
- Write requirements and flow technical specifications to components.
- Perform software development to create new risk assessment tools and workflows.
- Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles.

- Understanding of the principles and methods of hypervelocity impact test programs for spacecraft materials or similar applications.
- Familiarity with MMOD shielding designs and design considerations of spacecraft.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering or another technical field
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
