About the Department

One of the first departments founded at the University of Chicago was the Department of Chemistry. Since then, The University of Chicago has been the recipient of more than 73 Nobel Prize recipients, 15 of which came from the Department of Chemistry. Our current faculty have considerable strength in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as in interdisciplinary research that delves into biology, physics, and materials science.


Job Summary

The Research Specialist will be providing routine and standardized laboratory support of research projects under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator. This position will assist in the maintenance and organization of stocks of supplies and reagents for the laboratory research. Research professional will also provide technical support in specific areas of research in the lab under supervision of PI and postdocs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct isolation and preparation of cfDNA samples and gDNA from tissue and assist in the preparation of samples for sequencing.

  • Assist in developing, operating, and maintaining tissue culture, associated support equipment, and consumables.

  • Assist lab members in preparing and conducting experiments, following established procedures or protocols, and assisting the supervisor with research projects.

  • Oversee and administer laboratory stocks of reagents and supplies. Assisting in ordering all materials needed for research.

  • Assist in technical support for laboratory equipment.

  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through < 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:         

  • B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or Biochemistry.

Experience:       

  • Maintaining laboratory stocks of supplies and reagents.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Molecular biology and genomics.

Preferred Competencies

  • Background in molecular biology.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions

  • Wet Laboratory environment.

  • Standard Office environment.
