Overview and Responsibilities
Chippewa Valley Technical College’s rural oral health fellowship is a one-year program funded through a Delta Dental of Wisconsin Foundation grant designed to provide new dental school graduates a year of additional clinical preparation supervised by practicing and retired dentists. The fellowship includes preparation for practice in a rural setting where specialty resources for difficult cases may not otherwise be available. The fellowship is extremely rewarding and provides additional hands-on training, support and collaboration from experienced mentors who love sharing their knowledge. Mentorship will include advancement in time motion and management of a practice. Fellows will learn to work with and lead the entire dental team while providing services to patients with a variety of needs.
Responsibilities:
- Provide general dentistry including restorative, endodontic, oral surgery, and removable prosthetics in clinical setting.
- Provide health education to improve and maintain oral health of patients.
- Assist with exams and treatment planning of Dental Hygienist program students in clinical setting.
- Serve as preceptor for Dental Assistant program students in a clinical setting.
- Establish guidelines, update manual, and monitor compliance for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Industry Labor and Human Relations (DIHLR), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines on Universal Standards.
- Provide exams and treatment plans for staff dental hygiene practice within clinic.
- Act as a resource for Dental Hygienist program faculty.
- Follow and reinforce clinic policies.
- Review student clinician appointment plan and instructor objectives.
- Observe assessments and provide feedback.
- Review dental charting and plaque/stain verification.
- Document treatment in Eaglesoft Dental Software for each patient and review client records for signatures
- Collaborate with preceptor to review chart notes at end of each day
- Circulate through clinic to be available to student clinicians.
- Review charts at beginning of clinical to be familiar with clients’ needs
- Recommend additional treatment and provide referrals when necessary.
- Assume responsibility for decisions concerning the necessity for medical release prior to clinical treatment.
- Review and maintain a medical emergency kit
- Assume responsibility for handling medical emergencies in the clinic.
- Participate in monthly chart audit to maintain accreditation standards.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current dental concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures and ability to follow them as required.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a team in an educational setting.

- Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced (select level, delete others) knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Qualifications
- Recent graduate of an accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school and hold a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree.
- Current license to practice dentistry in the State of Wisconsin.
- Eligible for a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license.
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
