Description
The Legislative Research Commission is accepting applications for the position of Proofreader in the
Legislative Services Department. This position is nonpartisan in nature and requires the ability to work with
neutrality in a politically charged environment.
The Legislative Research Commission (LRC) provides staff support to the Kentucky General Assembly. Job Duties:
- Proofread all documents with a keen eye for detail, typographical errors, formatting, and language that might be inflammatory or political.
- Edit for content, grammar, clarity, phrasing, style, tone, and organization.
- Compose and edit letters, questionnaires, citations, and other documents.
- Use The Gregg Reference Manual and Honor and Respect: The Official Guide to Names, Titles, and Forms of Address to consistently and accurately edit documents.
- Assist other staff in making corrections to work product to convey a professional impression on behalf of every legislator.
- Perform necessary research to verify information contained in the document.
- Report repetitive mistakes to Supervisor for Legislator Services.
- Adhere to LRC writing style manual.
- Develop and present training workshops as a professional development tool for LRC staff, upon the request of legislative services supervisors.
- Assist Citations Proofreaders when necessary and time allows.
- Provide training to legislative assistants on writing skills through workshops, newsletters, and individualized instruction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Proficiency with current office technology, including office IT general business software such as Microsoft Office products.
- Exceptional attention to detail and thorough command of editorial and proofreading skills.
- Excellent understanding of authoritative style and reference manuals. (The Gregg Reference Manual and Hone and Respect: The Official Guide to Names, Titles, and Forms of Address)
- Knowledge of correct business English, writing styles, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with colleagues and explain corrections in materials and to suggest effective writing techniques to reach target audience.
- Basic knowledge of the legislative process.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, publishing, or related field.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:
One year in education, journalism, publishing, or related field.
