About the role

The EJW Racial Justice Act (RJA) Fellow will (1) represent clients in RJA in trial and appellate courts; (2) together with other justice partners, gather Los Angeles County criminal charging, prosecution and sentencing data for analysis of trends and patterns that implicate the RJA; (3) prepare and litigate impact litigation pursuant to remedies under the RJA; (4) generate usable and citable research to support RJA claims by other practitioners in the criminal defense community and (5) develop best practices for racial justice litigation in California and other states.

The EJW Racial Justice Act Fellow is a two-year, full-time, fixed-term position limited to an applicant who has successfully proposed, been accepted to and agreed to the Equal Justice Works fellowship for this project. The fellow will be supervised by the directors of the Juvenile Innocence & Fair Sentencing (JIFS) Clinic and the Collateral Consequences of Conviction Justice Project (CCCJP). The Fellow will be responsible for (1) in-court litigation on behalf of new and existing clients in the JIFS Clinic and the CCCJP, pursuant to the RJA; (2) creating a usable historical database of RJA data for Los Angeles County for use in structuring RJA claims; (3) generating research in the form of white papers, journal articles and other writings, designed to advance the dialogue concerning the scope and content of the RJA; (4) co-supervise clinic students working on RJA litigation cases; and (5) develop case litigation plans, sample pleadings and databases for future RJA litigation.

The candidate must have a JD degree; extensive study in the area of criminal law; a demonstrated interest in California post-conviction juvenile sentencing and litigation; and at least two years of practical post-conviction litigation in a law school clinical setting, with an emphasis on California post-conviction litigation.

Salary range

$66,600.00 - $86,600.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
